Handcrafted Cajun Popcorn Hits Your Happy Snacking Spot

Cajun popcorn uses a little bit of different seasonings to create a collective spice blend that flavors the popped kernels to perfection. My version includes a hot sauce-studded butter sauce whose rich taste complements the spice blend beautifully.

And, I also include a bit of brown sugar in my original take on this New Orleans-spiced snack. This small amount of sweetness intensifies the natural flavors of the otherwise spicy popcorn recipe. It's quite unexpected and alluring. So, each bite satisfies the spice lovers and appeases those looking for a more multi-flavorful popcorn experience. Indeed.

Top Recipe Tip

This Cajun popcorn recipe tastes best when it is freshly made. Therefore, pop the popcorn as you are gathering the other ingredients to ensure the most robust flavors and tender, melt-in-your-mouth textures.

Should You Serve Cajun Popcorn Room-Temperature or Warmed?

Cajun popcorn tastes good at room temperature and when warmed. So, it's really up to you. The popped popcorn kernels are more fluffy and uniform at room temperature, though.

When you heat them, they lose some air. So, they're still delicious, but not as aesthetically pleasing as the ones served at room temperature.

Ingredients & Substitutions

  • One bag of microwave popcorn is all you need to make this super delicious snack. You can double, triple, or even quadruple the recipe, as needed, to serve a large number of guests at once. Most microwave popcorn bags yield 10 to 12 cups of popcorn. So, if you're using stovetop popcorn, pop about ยฝ cup of kernels to equate to one bag of microwave popcorn.
  • I use salted butter in this Cajun-spiced popcorn recipe. You can use unsalted butter, if desired, and add salt to taste to the dried spice mixture.
  • Crystal hot sauce brings a spicy element to the dish that plays perfectly off the sweet brown sugar. I also recommend Louisiana hot sauce or Tabasco
  • The dried spice mixture includes four common spices, including garlic powder and paprika, that you likely already have on hand. You can also substitute one tablespoon of prepared Cajun seasoning in place of the separate spices, if desired.

And that's it, y'all!!

This Cajun popcorn satisfies from the very first bite. The first thing that you notice is the distinctive medley of South Louisiana flavors. Then, the bit of brown sugar hits your tongue, and you're stunned by the complementary sweet and spicy popcorn treat taste that's tantalizing the tongue.

Then, as the hot sauce-spiked buttery goodness glides down your throat, you're already reaching for your next handful of snack time scrumptiousness. For sure!!

Notes

The butter and seasonings on the Cajun popcorn cause the popped kernels to deflate through reheating in the oven. So, it will still taste delicious but will likely not look as beautiful as it does when served room temperature.
If your microwave popcorn and butter are both unsalted, add about ยผ to ยฝ teaspoon of salt to the dried spices.
