Homemade Cajun Butter: A Versatile Spread and Sauce...

Homemade Cajun butter is a type of compound butter that features fresh herbs and dried spices typically used in traditional Cajun cuisine. It's used as a spread on warm toasted bread, electrifying each bite with pops of garlic, parsley, and cayenne. 

When heated, it becomes a Cajun garlic butter sauce that elevates the taste of numerous foods, including:

  • Salted butter eliminates the need for adding extra salt to the finished recipe, making it the most logical choice for making homemade Cajun butter. However, you can also use unsalted butter with great success. Just add a pinch of salt to the butter before proceeding with the recipe.
  • Freshly minced garlic injects the homemade Cajun butter with deep, complex flavor profile base notes. If you use jarred minced garlic, the robust taste and textures will be much less profound. But, don't let it stop you from making the recipe, as the Cajun compound butter will still be delicious. You can also use garlic powder as a substitute in a pinch. 
  • Dried spices such as onion powder, paprika, cayenne, and celery seed bring balance to the fresh garlic, hot sauce, and parsley infusion, adding depth and dimension to each buttery bite. 

How to Make Homemade Cajun Butter 

Pour the softened butter into a large mixing bowl, then add the remaining ingredients.

Stir to combine, then transfer the mixture to a small bowl and refrigerate until ready to use.

You can also place the Cajun butter in the middle of a large section of plastic wrap, cover it with the wrap, then roll it back and forth until a log shape is achieved. Chill it for a few hours, then slice it into rings before serving.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup salted butter two sticks
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic about 4 medium-sized cloves
  • 2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley leaves or 2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes
  • 2 teaspoons hot sauce
  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ยฝ teaspoon paprika
  • ยผ teaspoon black pepper
  • โ…› teaspoon cayenne
  • โ…› teaspoon celery seed

Instructions

  • Place the softened butter in a large bowl.
  • Add the remaining ingredients, then use a large spoon to combine. If you desire a more luxurious texture, use a hand mixer to whip the ingredients until combined.
  • Transfer the mixture to a small, airtight container, then refrigerate it for at least one hour before using.
  • Alternatively, you can roll it into a log on a large sheet of plastic wrap, then twist both ends to enclose the Cajun butter in the wrap before refrigerating or freezing it until use. Then, let it come to room temperature slightly and use a sharp knife to cut it into circles right before serving.

Notes

Store the leftovers tightly covered in the fridge for up to 7 days. 
If using unsalted butter, add ยผ teaspoon of salt to the remaining ingredients.
